Why our sector is more influential than we might think
This isn’t the place for political persuasion – and in any case, I’m not yet decided on how to vote on AV – but I was tickled to receive this mailshot from the Vote Yes campaign. Having checked round a few friends, not everyone received one but all those who did got the same six celebrity endorsements, no matter what their profession (perhaps it was the marketing geek in me, but I did wonder if accountants, small business owners or doctors might have a different tailored approach).
So that only leaves one explanation: that the Vote Yes campaign thinks that all these people (the two you can’t see are Tony Robinson and Stephen Fry) are sufficiently influential – above all others – to secure my, and others, vote. Given every one of these people started their careers by treading the boards, could it be that (in Daily Mail speak) these luvvies are the real influencers of the middle class?
Not politicians of any hue; not journalists, not academics, not historians. Instead, actors could be setting the direction of democracy for the next hundred years.
Blimey! Next you’ll be telling me that The West Wing was a documentary…
